Ferals at Chigwell

As well as being Co-ordinator of PussyCat Lodge Trust, I am also a Brownie leader, so I was delighted when the two where mixed.

Lauren had told me that she had homed 3 feral cats in Chigwell. What I didn't realise was that they had found a fantastic home in the grounds of the Girl Guide camp site - over 53 acres of fields for them to roam and play in, but still have the care of the warden Yvonne.

Polo & Snowy hiding in their box

The mother from the garage in Barking, called Martha, was now renamed Oakie because the site is called Oaklands Farm and the Guides said she had a pattern on her head that looked like a picture of an oak tree!! The two white cats, who needed a special caring home because of the risk of skin cancer, were renamed Polo & Snowy because of their colour and that it was snowing when they arrived. Their names where chosen by the girls. This way they feel they have more of a say and responsibility for the cats care and this is what Guiding is all about.

Their home until Polo & Oakie escaped

When I went to visit the cats, I realised that they had really landed on their feet! They were doing well and were almost ready to explore the outside world. They were exploring every corner of the shed and doing their best to mount a sequel to The Great Escape by digging a hole in the corner!!

Oakie had been planning her escape for months. When Yvonne went one night to feed them, Oakie, sensing the opportunity, made a dash for freedom. As the door opened, Yvonne saw a flash of fur as she sped off into the distance. A few weeks later Polo also made a dash for freedom and has now been seen playing in the grass chasing the butterflies!

Update - April 2005

Snowy has been a regular visitor and is often seen prowling around. She comes home to the shed for supper and often to snooze in the warm! We thought that Polo had disappeared as we hadn't seen her for about a month, then on Friday last week they were both playing on the veranda of Oakland's Lodge! I don't know where she has been but she's back, which is the good thing. I think she may be a bit of a "Dick Whittington" and goes off to seek her fortune somewhere then realises where her bread is being buttered and comes home again!

We have never seen Oakie - I am sure she has found herself a good home somewhere as there are plenty of rich pickings around here.
