Too often, black or black & white cats are left behind as their "prettier" friends and relations are chosen for new lives in new homes. These Black Beauties are pure gold that the world at large has forgotten about and all too frequently overlooks. Their loss you might say, and you may be right, but these delightful characters deserve a loving home of their own too! These pages are designed to change a few mistaken beliefs and alert folk to the pure delight that is the Black Cat!

I often purr and wonder As I sit here in the sun Why nobody will talk to me. Is it something that I've done?
They talk to little Bertie Or the tortoiseshell next door To Whitey just across the way And Julie with damaged paw
I rush up to the bars - They look at me and sigh. Then they shrug their shoulders And quickly walk on by
I can't understand it, I'm a lovely pussycat! Could it be my colour? You see, my fur's all black!! |

Black Cats have been associated with deities, witches and magic for centuries. Cats have been worshipped, condemned, persecuted, have been thought of as having powers, as being the omens of bad luck and also of being a good luck charm.
Part of the "mystery" surrounding the black cat comes from the traditional interpretation of the colour black. Black is the colour of the night, and of "evil".

Black can be the colour of elegance or class (such as a black-tie only event, and black evening gowns). Black can represent ideas such as power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, unhappiness, depth, style, sadness, remorse, anger, and mourning. |
|

|
Black can also represent a lack of colour or emptiness. It can mean sorrow or mourning, in the Christian tradition of wearing black to funerals. Used by itself, black can represent bad luck or misfortune. Black is also the colour of black magic.
